Introducing Luke Davidson

in News
November 30, 2017

South African-born Luke Davidson drops his first two singles to radio this week, releasing Million Years and The Lover as a debut musical spectrum.

Luke Davidson is unlike most songwriters. The music industry has seen countless artists launch their recording careers in their late teens and early twenties, fuelling the idea that you need to be young to be successful. Davidson breaks this mould and takes the leap in his thirties. Not unheard of though as the likes of Leonard Cohen, Bill Withers, and Debbie Harry (from Blondie) all launched their careers in their thirties. This was never a factor for Davidson who instead waited till he was ready, and it shows in his singles Million Years and The Lover.

There’s a clear diversity between the two singles which makes for an interesting introduction to Davidson. Why the different sounds? Davidson explains, saying Million Years is more a true depiction of where my music has come from. It's truer to the roots of my musical indie rock background. When I’m sitting on my couch at home and playing a few tunes on the guitar, Million Years is the kind of flavour that is created. This is a melodic indie rock song with a hint of Twenty One Pilots energy coming through. When I sat down with the amazing producer Francois de Klerk (who’s worked with the likes of Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel) our creative expressions went a little wild creating something completely different to what we normally do, an EDM contemporary deep house track. Listening to TiMO ODV and The Weeknd, we thought ‘let’s create something of our own in this genre’, and so we did and here we have it - The Lover

Delving deeper into each song and first looking at Million Years as the track that is the most representative of Davidson’s writing, the theme is also very relevant to the launch of his recording career. Million Years I wrote as a conversation with myself, my inner teacher. I have moments of self-doubt and disappointment, sometimes it’s about the feeling that I can’t reach the expectations I set out for myself. As the lyrics depict, what if in a million years I might not reach the personal state I expect of myself to reach, would you still love me and would I still be able to love myself? It’s a song depicting a journey through my individual inner challenges. The internal conversations I find myself discussing in an attempt to move forward. I ask myself will it be ok if I don’t make it, and if I’m just here as I am, or will I still love myself and will you have the heart to love me too?” and Davidson’s lyrics and vocal delivery beautifully carries the feel of this desperation and worry.

The Lover is a complete 180 from Million Years and explores a more playful side to Davidson. “I wrote this with the intention in mind that in a dance/club environment the presence of fun, love, the hunt, sexual attraction, lust, and coolness play a very big role in having a good night out. This song is intended for those that wish to feel something unique and special while living in this jungle world of desire that through this energetic dance track we can together reach for that enlightened space of existence. Something of substance, real, unselfish, something special, not of ourselves.”

Davidson started developing his musical skills very early in life, writing his first song at age 11 with the help of his mother and father. Thereafter he learned how to play the piano and guitar in his teens and very quickly started composing his own songs. Like all aspiring musicians, he started playing in school bands and enjoying camp fire guitar sessions with friends. Soon the passion grew into a desire to entertain and express an array of meaningful moments in music. His twenties were filled with pub gigs during which he was selected for the Cape Town Rocks CD compilation and the Barleycorn singer songwriter’s competition final, but he continued to stay a musician under the radar.

It’s only in his thirties that Davidson decided to take his music to producers and invest some time in his songs with international industry professionals. Listening to the few tracks Davidson has released, his songs have an influence of current indie rock mixed with an EDM flare. His 90’s rock roots have integrated well with the current music flavour and is innovative in its style and production.

This is just the beginning for Luke Davidson. He is ready for the world to hear his music and there’s a lot more to look forward to.

The multi-award winning rock band, Prime Circle is taking to the road with a nationwide tour exciting fans across South Africa with performances in Namibia, Jo’burg, Durban, Cape Town, East London, George, Plettenberg Bay and more.

The Pretty Like The Sun Tour will include 15 shows from 8 December ‘17 to 7 January ’18. The series of concerts is named off the hot single, Pretty Like The Sun which will follow The Gift as the second most played radio tune from their latest album, If You Don’t You Never Will.

If You Don’t You Never Will is Prime Circle’s seventh studio album, and their first new recording since their acclaimed 2014 release Let the Night In, which was repackaged as a deluxe edition in 2016.

Regarded as South African rock royalty, with a string of awards and sold-out concerts to their credit, the band has spent the past couple of years ratcheting up its international profile, building a solid following in the tough-to-crack and discerning German market in particular.

Prime Circle may have secured a German agent and an international recording deal, yet their roots remain firmly lodged in South Africa – which is why they are giving local fans first dibs at hearing their new material.

For Prime Circle, though, there’s clearly no time like the present to seize the day – and make the dreams and opportunities happen for themselves.

Prime Circle’s line-up is Ross Learmonth (vocals and guitar); Marco Gomes (bass); Dale Schnettler (drums); Neil Breytenbach (keyboard) and Dirk Bisschoff (guitar).

Catch them live:

WONDERboom head to China this weekend to perform at The Silk Road Indie Music Festival taking place in Chengdu from 1 to 3 December. This is the band’s first tour to China in their 21-year career span and follows fresh off the release of their latest studio album, Rising Sun.

The Silk Road Indie Music Festival
is a festival hosting bands from 14 different countries on a competitive platform. Crowd votes determine the winning band/country, which will be announced on the 3rd of December. WONDERboom will be performing on the main Saturday night line-up with key International press and media covering the event.

How did this all come about for WONDERboom? The Maritime Silk Road Music Festival and The Maritime Silk Road Music Industry Platform are developing music trade ties between China and international countries in music production, artist talent development, music education, technology innovation, concert performances and music content sales. Well-known International music consultant and label owner, Adrian Skirrowis the South African representative and is very excited at the prospect of showcasing one of South Africa’s premier music outfits.

“WONDERboom’s blend of high energy live performances, musicianship and blend of African flavoured pop hits is certain to set the bar high during the Silk Road festival and attract new audiences. The festival, now in its second year and almost double the size of 2016’s successful event, is being attended by more entertainment executives and media from around the world this year. WONDERboom’s performance will be broadcast on regional TV stations and packaged for national TV broadcast at a later date, offering the band an enviable platform to reach many millions of viewers and new music fans, via China’s massive mobile media network, with their unique sound and image. The Silk Road Festival in Chengdu will see WONDERboom compete against some acclaimed performers from 13 other nations,” comments Skirrow.

The Festival and Platform are under the official authority of China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and has officially begun operations.  It was established at a conference and pre-launch festival in Ningbo, China in November 2016, and more recently an international music industry forum during April 2017. The Festival and Platform are now rapidly expanding throughout China.

In November 2016, artists from eight countries were invited to perform at the Ningbo Maritime Silk Road International Music Festival.  The music festival successfully introduced and marketed international artists to Chinese audiences and promoted Chinese pop artists to world markets. For 2017, 13 international performing artists, along with Chinese pop artists will compete for most popular international act honour, across three days of music and celebrations.

WONDERboom are the second SA artist to perform at the Silk Road Festival in China, following the inaugural event in 2016.

Cito is so excited for the weekend! “It is a dream come true for us to rock out in China! It’ll be interesting to see how we go down with fellow music-lovers in Chengdu. Home of Panda Bear conservation and ancient culture and history, I know that this city will blow our minds! And to find ourselves representing South Africa again, after our memorable Global Battle of the Bands 13 years ago, is seriously a surreal thought. Please keep us, our journey and our performance on Saturday 2nd of December, in your hearts!!!”

WONDERboom return to SA shortly after to continue their Rising Sun album tour.

7 years has passed since the release of The Automatic Shuffle and WONDERboom have made the wait worthwhile releasing their powerful new studio album Rising Sun! Rising Sun is released exclusively on iTunes and Apple Music TODAY - http://apple.co/2hdekVi

Included in the tour is a trip to Ningbo in China from 1 to 3 December and it will be the band’s first visit to the country. WONDERboom will be performing at the Ningbo Cultural Festival, which is a festival hosting bands from 13 different countries on a competitive platform. Crowd votes determine the winning band/country, which will be announced on the 3rd of December. WONDERboom will be performing on the main Saturday night line-up with key International press and media covering the event.

Southern Light is also the brand new single from Rising Sun released to radio today and follows previous singles Great Escape and Ooh La La, both available on the brand new WONDERboom album.

The loss of drummer Garth McLeod in 2013 was a massive shock to the band. With time taken to grieve the loss and rework the future of WONDERboom, the band found a great new addition with Jonathan Bell stepping in on drums. The Rock & Roll machine was in motion again and it's been a cathartic and introspective journey since for the band. Die-hard fans can’t deny the sheer magical force that WONDERboom has become again. The live show is still pure power and energy!

Rising Sun captures this story in a dynamic way. The title track suggests what WONDERboom as a band feel - a new dawn. A revival of what was once regarded as an electric, live and very stimulating music experience, is here!

Cito explains why it took 7 years for this album to come out, saying “It took us a while to build up our creative momentum when Garth passed away and Jono stepped in. We felt like we were pretty much starting all over again and had to nurture our live chemistry with this new being. Having said that, the delay wasn’t calculated; it just was. Once we got our performance thing rocking again, the songs started to come. Martin and I started spending about 3 -4 days a week, writing songs and experimenting. Then, workshopping the songs with Wade and Jono, which gave the songs another killer dimension. We played all of these songs live to get the proper feedback we needed to tweak them. So, one and a half years after we started the process, we got to the point where we are happy with what we’ve got and proud to release.”

Rising Sun is a triumphant release from WONDERboom and is packed with powerful new songs. Singles such as Great Escape and Ooh La La have already been embraced with loving arms by fans and the South African music industry alike. Brand new single Southern Light is released today and other gems on the album include album opener Humans and potential singles Hell, Praying Mantis, In Place Of Something, and Shark Bite. WONDERboom are so excited for fans to hear this album! “For the first time EVER, we took our time and were extremely meticulous with the whole production process. Sometimes we’d re-record, other times we’d just scrap, but every song on Rising Sun is meant to be there and pretty much the cream of the crop. First album with Jono on drums. I think fans will get a sense of ‘Damn, you worked hard on this record!’ The attention to detail, the energy, the musicality, the soul… It’s all in there. We had a motto for the album and that was ‘GO THERE!’ No half-arsed attempts at any song. It’s heavy, it’s beautiful, it’s epic,” comments Cito.

WONDERboom have cemented their legendary status. 21 Years in the industry, 8 albums released, headlined many major SA festivals, been nominated for 5 SAMA’s (South African Music Awards), and won a Kanna Award & People Crystal Award in 2003 for South Africa’s hottest band. They also won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands & came SECOND WORLDWIDE! There can be few South African music fans that aren’t familiar with their hits, like Never Ever, Jafta Rebel, Something Wrong, Green Fever, Africa, Shadows, Charlie, It’s Great to be Alive, Best Side, On The Radio, and Karaoke Bar.

Rising Sun adds to this impressive list as we salute SA’s favourite Rock band, WONDERboom.

Note To The Editor – WONDERboom Biography:

Biography – October 2017

21 years on and WONDERboom are still rocking South Africa! It’s no small feat to be hailed as one of South Africa’s longest-lived and most legendary rock bands, and still going strong.

Although rock is the fundamental sound of the band, WONDERboom have delved into different genres, ranging from funk through to punk and even kwaito.

None can deny that WONDERboom’s biggest strength is their live performance. From festivals to nightclubs, the band just kicks ass – consistently!

WONDERboom have released 8 albums, headlined many major SA festivals, been nominated for 5 SAMA’s (South African Music Awards), and won a Kanna Award & People Crystal Award in 2003 for South Africa’s hottest band. They also won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands & came SECOND WORLDWIDE!

There can be few South African music fans that aren’t familiar with their hits, like Never Ever, Jafta Rebel, Something Wrong, Green Fever, Africa, Shadows, Charlie, It’s Great to be Alive, Best Side, On The Radio, Karaoke Bar and now, currently on 5fm and campus stations, Ooh La La

Cito, Martin Schofield and Wade Williams, the founding members of WONDERboom, have been writing songs and performing together for over 23 years and show no signs of stopping the rocking rollercoaster!

It's been 7 years and one hell of a rollercoaster ride since the release of their last album, The Automatic Shuffle.

In 2013 they lost their very dear friend and drummer, Garth McLeod, to a freak motorcycle accident.

Then, in a sort of reinvention, they’ve had to get the WONDERmachine up and going again.

Enter Jonathan Bell on drums, and so the process of a new Rock & Roll relationship began...

It's been a cathartic and introspective journey since, but no one, who has seen them live recently, can deny the sheer magical force that WONDERboom has become again.

Rising Sun, their new album, captures this story in a dynamic way. The title track suggests what they, as a band, feel - a new dawn. A revival of what was once regarded as an electric, live and very stimulating music experience, is here again!

Singles such as Great Escape and Ooh La La have already been embraced with loving arms by fans and the South African music industry alike.
